01 - 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
02 - 10 ounces mini marshmallows
03 - 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
04 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

→ Coloring

05 - Red gel food coloring
06 - Blue gel food coloring

→ Decoration

07 - Red, white, and blue sprinkles

# Directions:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease the surface.
02 - Divide marshmallows and butter into three equal portions: approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add red gel food coloring until desired shade is achieved. Fold in 2 cups Rice Krispies until evenly coated. Press mixture firmly and evenly into the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe saucepan clean and melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe saucepan clean and melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Add blue gel food coloring until desired shade is achieved. Fold in remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - Sprinkle the top layer with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from pan using parchment paper edges and slice into 16 equal squares.

# Expert Hints:

01 -
  • Three layers of pure nostalgia in one chewy bite, and nobody suspects how ridiculously easy they are to make.
  • The gel coloring keeps everything vibrant without turning your treat into a soggy mess like liquid dyes would.
  • Kids and adults genuinely fight over the last piece, which is always a good sign.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring isn't just a preference—liquid coloring adds moisture that breaks down the structure and turns your treat into a sticky disaster.
  • Greasing your hands or spatula before pressing each layer is the difference between a satisfying push and a frustrating stick-and-tear situation.
03 -
  • A pinch of salt mixed into any of the layers brings out the sweetness and makes the whole thing taste more intentional.
  • If you want extra flavor depth, use salted butter instead of unsalted for one of the layers—I usually use it for the white layer where you can actually taste it.
